The Victoria Barge Canal connects Victoria to the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway and the deep-water port, Calhoun Port Authority. The man-made sea level canal transports barge traffic throughout the industrial area.
In 2002 the project to widen and deepen the canal dimensions to a width of 125 feet and a depth of 12 feet, was completed. This means that the canal now matches the size of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway with which it connects, and allows larger cargo loads access to the canal.
The Port turning basin area is situated on over 400 acres and is served by rail and four-lane divided highways. POV Dock No. 1 is a 350-foot transit dock . A new lighting system allows for 24-hour cargo operations. There are 20 mooring sites, 17,000 square feet of shed space and over 3 acres of improved ground storage areas available. A 7,300 square foot office and storage building is ready for occupancy. POV Dock No. 2 is an 800-foot string pier available for docking sites and barge repair. Major products transferred are liquid and dry bulk and general and project cargos.
The Port has recently expanded its Industrial Park with multi-modal access by more than 1800 acres. The Park is located within a Free Trade Zone and a Texas Enterprise Zone and has the ability to "build to suit" and tailor a package specific to customer facility and transportation needs.
There's a huge payoff for companies using the barge: in time and cost. Because the barge canal connects with the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, barge traffic has a protected waterway running from the Texas-Mexican border to Apalachee Bay, Florida. Additionally, the waterway ties in with the Mississippi River, allowing connections to cities in the Midwest and South. The Port of Port Lavaca-Point Comfort, situated near the southern terminus of the Victoria Barge Canal, allows cargo to be transferred to ocean-going vessels.
Companies benefiting from the barge canal include Equalizer Inc., DuPont, Lyondell, Fordyce Co., BP Chemicals, and Dow Seadrift Operations. These companies can receive gases, chemicals, and other products at their doorstep.
Community support of the infrastructure improvement is a fine example of how the people of Victoria understand and respond to industry needs. Prime industrial sites along the Victoria Barge Canal are available. Please contact VEDC at
