Building permits granted to ethanol company
Lone Star Ethanol has received two permits that will allow it to begin building a new $180 million ethanol plant at the Port of Victoria by mid-summer. When complete next year, the plant will employ about 60 people full-time.

Harvesting algae could be in area's future - Land near port considered for biodiesel plant
Victoria could soon be seeing green. Green algae, that is. A 350-acre plat of land at the Port of Victoria is one of three sites in the running for a $30 million biodiesel plant, Brent Kartchner, managing director of South Texas Algae, LLC announced Tuesday morning.

Coleto Creek plant expansion announced
GOLIAD – The Crossroads region is getting an infusion of power in the form of a $1.2 billion expansion of the coal-burning plant at Coleto Creek in Goliad County. Officials of International Power and South Texas Electric Cooperative announced the expansion Friday during a news conference on the steps of the Goliad County Courthouse. The expansion will employ about 1,000 construction workers during a five-year build-out, said Mike Fields, Coleto Creek’s plant manager. Once operational, the expansion will add about 40 full-time plant positions and 32 indirect positions at support industries.

Plant worker earns average of $70,000
A proposed nuclear power plant in Victoria County would carry huge economic gains, experts predict. The boom would start with about 2,000 temporary construction jobs, said Dale Fowler, president of the Victoria Economic Development Corp. “The construction phase will be a significant economic impact on its own, both from providing very good construction jobs for our residents and those coming from other areas,” he said of the approximately five-year building process.

Victoria top site for proposed nuclear power plant
Victoria County is the top site for a $4 billion nuclear power plant, Exelon Nuclear officials announced Tuesday morning. The announcement indicates the company’s intent to file a Combined Construction & Operating License Application, not necessarily to build. Community leaders applauded the decision.

Workforce Solutions recognized as top-performing board in Texas
Workforce Solutions of The Golden Crescent in Victoria received a $100,000 bonus for exemplary service from the Texas Workforce Commission. The award placed the Golden Crescent center first among the 28 workforce centers statewide. UHV expands MBA program to China
Several hundred students in China will be able to earn their master of business administration degrees from Victoria. The University of Houston-Victoria and five universities in China have partnered to expand UHV's Global Master of Business Administration Program. UHV President Tim Hudson, School of Business Administration Dean Charles Bullock and Professor Jifu Wang went to China in mid-October to finalize the deal. The program now includes schools in Xi'an, Beijing, Nanjing and Hangzhou, extending the reach of the university's existing program, said Jane Mims, director of services for the UHV School of Business. The university also has programs in Mexico and Spain.

Hu-Dat Asian Cuisine will open here soon
Victorians looking for a taste of Vietnamese food will soon have their chance. Hu-Dat Asian Cuisine has submitted two permits with the city - one calling for a $200 demolition, which was filed in October, and a $100,000 building permit submitted in November. GBRA approves water for Exelon, even though plant may not come here
Exelon Nuclear has the right to lease Texas river water for the next two years, water officials announced Wednesday. The Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority board of directors approved a reservation agreement with Exelon Generation Company, LLC, enabling the company to lease 75,000 acre-feet of water north of state Highway 35 for the next two years while they determine where – and if – to build a nuclear plant.

Exelon Nuclear will need portion of Canal System Water Rights
Plans for a proposed nuclear plant in Texas press on, as discussion of a water reservation agreement and new reactors are under way. Exelon Nuclear announced plans in June to apply for a combined construction and operating license application, a beginning step in securing a plant in Victoria or Matagorda counties. The Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority will discuss a two-year reservation agreement for a portion of the Canal System Water Rights at today's 10 a.m. meeting, according to a meeting agenda.

Victoria gets two new retailers
Victoria may have lost one long-standing retailer, but another is quickly on its way in. Fallas Paredes will open its doors tomorrow at 5217 N. Navarro St., just weeks after Dunlaps moved out. The Gardena, Calif.-based company offers discounted clothing for men, women, children and infants, and the building was bustling Tuesday morning as employees breezed through the store, carefully hanging clothing on the racks. And Fallas Paredes isn't alone. The area's seen an onslaught of businesses choosing to bring business to Victoria. Earthbound Trading Company is setting up shop in the Victoria Mall, where it will open Oct. 20 next to the Claire's boutique.

New Suzuki dealership is coming to Victoria
A second Suzuki dealership should roll into town before the first of the year, Mark Graiff said. Quality Suzuki of Victoria is setting up shop at 6702 N. Navarro St., where Ryan's restaurant once was. Plans are still underway, but the entity will likely include a 5,000 square-foot showroom space, office space for accounting, 10 full-service bays and a parts department, said Graiff, director of operations for Quality Auto Group.

Heart center receives special certification
Patients needing nuclear heart stress tests can now undergo them locally in an accredited lab. This should give patients the confidence their nuclear heart tests will be accurate, said Dr. Harish Chandna, of the Victoria Heart and Vascular Center. Chandna, a nuclear board-certified cardiologist and center co-owner, said the distinction shows the center has quality equipment, a trained staff and thus the ability to spot heart problems quickly and accurately.

Still in the steel business - Workers in South Texas Steel Service Company bring their expertise to Victoria
Superman they aren't, but two "men of steel" have brought their services to Victoria. Carlisle Maxwell and Michael Means opened South Texas Steel Service Company in the old Safety Steel building at 201 E. Crestwood Drive about six weeks ago. Plans afoot for Albertsons building - Company would turn empty building into local call center
A Colorado-based company is considering spending $2.5 million to convert the former Albertsons store building in Victoria into a call center that handles inbound calls, creating jobs and salaries officials said will benefit the economy. "If they move forward with the plans as we know them, it would mean potentially hundreds of jobs working for a company that has a very good standing in the community," said Dale Fowler with the Victoria Economic Development Corp.

And if plans announced Thursday become a reality, it also could be neighbors with Exelon Nuclear's new nuclear power plant. The plant, if built in Matagorda County, would be 10 miles south of Collegeport near the lake. A site 20 miles south of Victoria is Exelon's secondary choice for the plant.

Plant's effects on uranium operations uncertain
The Texas Legislature and uranium mining
House Bills 3837 and 3838, OK'd during the most recent legislature, provide protection of property and water rights for landowners during the exploration process for uranium. The bills provide more stringent regulations during the exploration process, as well as provide notice to communities before exploration begins, according to state Rep. Yvonne Gonzalez Toureilles, D-District 35. They also mandate uranium companies provide water quality information to communities. Most importantly, they will now have to provide pre-exploratory water testing.

Used fuel is stored at nuclear plants, for now
Spent fuel from any nuclear plant would have to be temporarily stored at the plant even after the federal government decides on a permanent repository for the highly radioactive material. Exelon Nuclear announced plans today to apply for a combined construction and operating license application, a preliminary step in securing a plant. A piece of land about 10 miles south of Collegeport in Matagorda County is the company’s primary site, said Nesbit, Exelon’s communications director. Texas Zoo undergoing transformation - New structures, animals and programs set for Victoria zoo
The times they are a-changin' at the zoo. Texas Zoo animal curator Angie Killough walks through the zoo pointing to areas where animal exhibits will be changing, but one doesn't have to look very far to see the transformations. Construction seems to be ever-present as enclosures are being taken down and new structures are going up throughout the zoo, located in the heart of Riverside Park.
